Thank You Letter from Cecilia Chang on J4NA's Making Tracks Fundraiser Dear Supporters and friends of Justice for New Americans, It was a blast!! I wish you were there to witness the crowd, mingle with artists and recipients of the awards. The musical "Making Tracks" was a huge success. Many of our supporters wished they had taken their husband(s) and children to our event. Many were very disappointed when they found out Sunday was the last day of the show. Our fundraising would have shoot through the ceiling had we thought of selling tissue paper by the sheet at the intermission. The reading of the Wen Ho Lee case directed by Michael Cheng was very powerful. People are telling us that it definitely brought back strong emotion of the Wen Ho Lee era. Congressman Mike Honda's presence meant an awful lot to us and to the awardees. Representatives Nancy Pelosi, Pete Stark and Mike Honda all had their awards prepared for the awardees. The "Breaking the silence" award is unique in itself. It was made out of an old newspaper article published the day after Lee's release. There was a picture of Dr. Lee (with his signature) and the entire defense team behind him standing outside the courtroom on the day of his release. I really like some of the things said by Dan Stober and Ian Hoffman who introduced John Cline and Walter Goad respectively. Dan Stober described John Cline as "scary smart". John Cline, according to Dan is one of those mult-tasking types that plays video games while preparing his legal paper for the court room next morning. John Cline worked mostly behind the scene even though the case attracted national attention. With Ian Hoffman's introduction we learned that Dr. Goad was a great outdoor person. He and his wife Maxine lived through the McCarthy period and remembered Opprehemier's story with distaste. Dr. Goad felt strongly that he must spoke up for Wen Ho Lee, a fellow scientist, even though he was in great physical pain during the last few months of his life. With the encouragement from fellow APS scientists Hugh Dewitt and Ed Gerjuoy and assistance from John cline and support he submitted a declaration to the judge shooting down all the falsified theories of "royal jewels" and "upsetting the strategic balance of the United States". Dr. Donna Goad, his daughter came to receive the award on his behalf. We are most thankful that she agreed to make a special trip from New Mexico for this event. The "Breaking the Silence" award for media excellence went to the World Journal this year. They stood tall among the medias that refused to follow the witch hunt initiated by New York Times in 1999. Their news broadcast of the cases along with other newspaper like Singtao Daily, San Jose Mercury news and KTSF (Chinese TV) among Chinese readership in the SF/Bay area gave WenHoLee.org now Justice for New Americans the support base for advocacy and fundraising. We also like to take this opportunity to thank San Jose Repertory Theatre for their generosity, openness and willingness to work with us; Last but not the least all the volunteers who put in so much to make sure we have a successful event. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Cecilia |
