History
Justice for New Americans (JNA), formerly known as WenHoLee.org, is an organization based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our mission is to eliminate the biases that exist in this country, based on an erroneous perception of "perpetual foreigners", through grass roots education and public advocacy. J4NA President Cecilia Chang, entrpreneur and community activist, formed WenHoLee.Org in October 1999 in response to the false allegations of spying made against Dr. Wen Ho Lee. The case marked a watershed moment in Asian American political activism. "New immigrant citizens usually think that if they just work hard and don't make a lot of noise that things will be all right for them," says Cecilia. Unfortunately, immigrant minorities and their American-born children often face discrimination because of racial and ethnic profiling. Moreover, they are often unaware of their basic constitutional rights until it is too late.
As the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon have revealed, many more new immigrants in America, unaware of their basic civil rights, have been unfairly targeted by federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. These new developments have compounded with an already troubled system to create a national crisis. Cecilia has decided to apply her experience from the Wen Ho Lee case to fighting for the rights of other minority immigrants who have been wrongly accused. Justice for New Americans will reach out to all new Americans to educate them about achieving due process as guaranteed by their constitutional rights and empower them with a vehicle for political advocacy. |
