News | From the Bill of Rights Defense Committee:
House of Representatives may vote on PATRIOT Act Reauthorization as soon as Friday, Dec. 9. The most recent conference report draft available is here. It is possible, although not confirmed, that little in the draft has changed. We understand that the sunsets for sections 206, 215, and "lone wolf" have been shortened to four years. However, other crucial PATRIOT Act flaws have been addressed, such as:
No required connection between records sought and a suspected terrorist or foreign agent for either section 215 (business records/library records) or 505 (expanded National Security Letter powers).
Punitive additions to the National Security Letter power that would result in penalties being imposed for failure to comply with a records request or the permanent gag order.
